  1. I misread the title of this post…I thought it was going to be about “spaving”…spending because “I saved money!”

I liked this post though. And yes, it’s very nice to have zero cc debt, no car payment and no student loans. We’re chipping away at the mortgage now, slowed down by my recent layoff. Darn economy. :D

It is very difficult to express to people just how nice of a way of life this is. I had to use a cc for my job, my own personal cc that I resurrected when I got that job, and it was a clutch to the heart every time that bill arrived, because my company was not timely in reimbursement. Now I get to experience life without that once again. It’s nice. :)

Yet another great post Brad! I have to say that many people have so many excuses as to why they ‘need’ debt. I am a single mother and I hear all kinds of reasons directed at me for how a cash advance or other predatory loan could help me get by. Well, it can’t because I have a plan. Yes that means we don’t have cable TV or fancy cell phones or the latest technology, but I must sacrifice some things in order to stay out of debt. I have also learned to WAIT to pay cash for what I need – what a concept! Creating a plan and sticking to it is HARD WORK but if you can ignore the messages being directed toward you and stay gazelle intense toward your goal it can be done.

I made my final car payment on May 29! My car had to go in the shop once every month since January with over $100 in repairs each time. Each time, I had friends who encouraged me to get rid of it and basically take up a new payment. How about a hybrid to ‘save on gas money’!! NO THANKS. I asked for deals with the mechanic, paid CASH for my repairs and am now paying myself a car payment so when the time comes I can pay cash for my next car. The week after I made the payment, the car company called and offered me, one of their ‘best customers’, to come in and look at their new inventory. I told them, no thanks! That I would come to see them when I had cash in hand. That new car smell was on my mind, but I have a plan! It is hard work, but it can be done. You have to plan and stick to it and stop listening the messages of BROKE PEOPLE.

Thanks for encouraging us to stay out of the box. I love the idea of being weird!

  3. Re: Buying a house without a mortgage. Minneapolis is one of the largest gatherings of Somali immigrants in the U.S. As a result, some of us Christians are learning how Islam differs from the Judeo-Christian beliefs. One of the Islam tenets is that mortgages are considered a violation. Further: what the Koran and its interpreters have to say about cc debt is mainstream EOD thinking.

Google “Islam debt” or “mortgage Islam” and see what I mean.

  4. Great article – it is true – if you live below your means – pay yourself first, make choices- save before spending – you have FREEDOM!

  5. Thank you Tanya and Peacebug! It’s true Tanya that the excuses run high. Sometimes I hate writing these kinds of articles because people mistake it for being harsh when really it is out of wanting to help people. I believe in personal responsibility and making different decisions and with that comes the simple fact that we control those decisions. Outside forces are at work but a plan will make any situation that much more manageable. What I said would happen did! I lost 6 subscribers due to the Motivation posts on personal responsibility. Oh well, you can’t make everyone happy I guess, but I am glad the both of you liked this. Congratulations on making that last car payment and sorry it took me so long to get over here to congratulate you. Being weird is better than being broke! :)

  6. Thanks Generation Millionaire…so true!

Emilie: Thanks for the insight and it is something I need to look into further. I have been hearing a lot about this subject lately. Mainly the stuff about there being Muslim safe investments that are starting to pick up speed. Thanks for pointing those things out.
