Great interview! I love FiscalGeek’s points about being debt-free allowing you the flexibility to change jobs if you want, move if you want. And it’s true that debt is “sold as a necessary tool.” The reason I even started acquiring credit cards was that a furniture store gave me the option of financing the furniture I was going to buy (even though I had cash to buy it), and the woman who called to tell me I’d been denied said, “You know, my son got a credit card to build his credit, and it really does the trick.” Little did she know I used those credit cards to furnish my new apartment and buy groceries for the first few months of living on my own.

Since then, I’ve rediscovered patience. We all learned it as children. What happened when I wanted the newest toy but didn’t have the money? I had to do more chores around the house, help Mom out when she needed it and save my pennies. And I have to say, it feels much better to save for something, buy it and know that I own it without worrying about how long it’ll take me to pay off those darn credit cards! :)

    Congratulations! Some awesome inspiration!

  5. Thanks very much for sharing my story Brad, I haven’t tired of telling it yet! It’s a fantastic feeling and I found myself dreaming this morning of what would be next now that I’m not held hostage by my job.

  6. Very good job Paul. I’m betting there are going to be quite a few of us right behind you and Brad in the coming year.

Good luck to all of the “Debt Busters” reading this.

For us to dig our way out of debt was a slow and arduous road. We ended up at times feeling like the weeks, months and years were tedious. That is putting it mildly. After 6 years of no vacations, no nothing we are now hoping that the road will be a little easier and more pleasurable.

  8. Inspiration! So he see that contentment is better than being in debt and also his various toys that wasn’t needed. This is what place a lot of us in debt the things that were wants but not needs. His wife was the one who sacrifice in this and I am glad that he acknowledged this as well. Struggling to maintain a grocery list and also being in the kitchen as well. Ha females work and more work lol. Congratulation on being debt free and I wish you all the best with your future plans.

  9. Congratulations! You will have your Emergency Fund in place in no time! We did not pull back on the reigns until the EF was in place. Debt free on 9/30 and EF in place on 12/31! 2009 was our year and 2010 will be yours!

Your thoughts on contentment and realizing how blessed you truly are, I could have written that myself. I, too, learned the same lessons during my Total Money Makeover.

    Conrats again! Way to go!

  10. Congrats! Good luck on your future goals!

  11. That’s awesome! Congratulations from another member of the debt-free brethren!

  12. Thanks so much for the kind words everyone. I’m just brimming with ideas for our new found freedom, most notably breaking free from the corporate world. Just want to blast out some of the mortgage to really get cranking.

    • I want to thank you again Paul for sharing your story with EOD readers! I don’t know of anyone that shouldn’t become inspired by what you and your family have done. One more time, congratulations sir! I can’t wait for you to experience the rest of what becoming debt free has to offer. I plan to share with everyone something that it has enabled us to be able to do on Monday. Stay tuned! :)
