Hello my awesome EOD readers! I am very excited to announce something that I have been thinking about for some time now. It’s called “The 50 Plates In 50 States Project”.
Basically, I think it would be SUPER COOL if someone in every state declared their hatred for debt the way that I have.
As some of you know, I have already done this myself.
So what I envision is for 49 of you, one from each state with the exception of Virginia, to eventually get a personalized plate that reads:
Once you have done this, be sure to email me at freedom {at} enemyofdebt {dot} com, so I can list your state as complete. If you have a website or blog, I would also be happy to link to it from this list of DEBT HATING AMERICANS.
I am going to make this even more exciting, as if that were possible right? When this list is completed, I will be giving away $50 to one lucky winner from the list. Winner will be chosen via random dot org by the number next to each state.
What are you waiting for? Go make me proud!
I have learned that some states charge an arm and a leg for the pieces of aluminum that are put on their cars. I created bumper stickers that are MUCH cheaper if you still want to show your support for Enemy of Debt and share your hatred of debt.

I will say one thing I have noticed from reading your site. Being out of debt makes you a really happy, happy, happy person. You are contangious – I can’t wait until I can begin to do things such as you have done beginning this year.
I appreciate your kind words very very much scraps, and I will have to agree with you completely on your observation. I AM MUCH MORE HAPPIER NOW THAT WE ARE DEBT FREE! I am just glad that it shows through on here where it is important. ๐
I cannot wait for you to join the debt free movement as well! I am rooting for you BIG TIME!
Awesome project, Brad! I’ll help spread the word!
Thank you Dustin! I knew you would like this. What state are you in again? (hint, hint) ๐
Even though I may be interested and think its a great project, the state of California will charge me $100 initially to get the plate and then $80 annually thereafter.
that would be pretty cool to have 50 IH8DEBT plates! ๐
Holy Crap! It is no surprise to me though as California is one of the worst run states. So many problems financially in California.
I would love for you to do it MoneyFunk but COMPLETELY understand why you wouldn’t be able to. That is highway robbery!!
I guess you don’t see too many personalized plates there huh? ๐
You are too cool for school my friend, freakin’ love this ๐ It’s almost as cool as that skateboard you were going to make me! Remember that? No? Well i’m waiting for it!!!
Oh don’t you worry J Money, I got you my friend! Give me some time and it will be yours good buddy! ๐
Hey, I’m from Ohio? And I would do this? But I REFUSE TO PAY for a personalized plate! Because I HATE DEBT that much, I don’t want even $50 more to come between me and getting debt-free!
So someone else from Ohio will have to take my place. But I’ll honk at them if I see them on the road and give a thumb’s up. And I’ll keep my $50, thankyouverymuch.
๐
I love the way you think Budgets Are The New Black!!! I would have waited if it cost me that much here in VA.
Being that I am the Enemy of Debt though, I am glad I was able to secure it before anyone else…not that I had much to worry about though. LOL
Tell a friend! ๐
This is awesome! ๐
Glad you think so Nikki! As you know, those that hate debt are in the minority. ๐
Hey- Why not bumper stickers? They’re a couple of bucks, and we can ALL have them!
Good idea Kelly, I will start working on something along those lines. You have to admit though, if I can pull this off it would be pretty darn cool. ๐
Hmmm, I’d probably get a well designed, affordable bumper sticker…
I’ll work on making that available. ๐
I actually already have personalized plates for all 3 of my vehicles. MR NAVY, MRS NAVY, and MS NAVY. I retired from the Navy after serving 20 years and as you can see, love my Navy!! By the way, in order…it’s my car, wife’s car, and the last one is my daughters car. ๐
I have a 4th car, 1966 VW Dual Cab Transporter..and I’m currently in a battle with the BMV over my choice of GOT BEER plates! LOL Wish me luck and good luck to you to J Money!!
Go get’em Mike! My father was in the Navy too, but he didn’t retire there—something I think he regrets.
Wish I could afford to do this! Unfortunately, it’s $90 to get the plate initially and $90/year after that…..
I cannot believe that so many states seem to charge SO MUCH for something so small. Don’t they get enough from us in taxes? Jeez!
What state do you live in?
Massachusetts
Massachusetts? Don’t tease me Beckey! ๐
Neat idea, but… my state of Maryland would charge me $25 / year. Having recently committed myself to frugality, I must pass on this. Perhaps when I’m out of debt… naaaa, why should I pay the state annually for a special plate that they make ONCE?
It is really ridiculous that they charge us annually for something that they make once AND FOR FREE by way of jailed labor. (Isn’t that how they still make them?)
People should be charged once for the special plate AND THAT’S IT!! Congratulations on recently committing to living frugally. It’s a good way to live! ๐
WOW! What a great idea! Yet, as frugal as I am, I don’t want to pay extra for the plates. Would you make a bumper sticker? I’d do that! I HATE DEBT!!!
LOVE IT! When our plates are up for renewal I’ll check into it (TN); my hubby would probably LOVE this on his car!. Actually, in our endeavor to be debt free, we’re selling my husband’s SUV and he’s driving my dad’s ’96 Mercury Grand Marquis (AL license plate). Maybe I can convince my dad to put that on the Mercury’s plate?!
Until then, I’m in for a bumper sticker or two! ๐ And I’ll even post one of your PayPal buttons on my website for the bumper sticker, too, if you’d like! Great idea, Brad!
BTW – it’s entirely possible that Dave Ramsey or someone from his crew has a TN license plate like that already… ๐
Hi I would looking into having a personalized License plate (Frame) for the state of California but (sorry) not a plate itself.
This is a great idea, and I will spread the word. I can imagine the feeling of being debt free. We are a long way to getting there but we are kicking that debt every day; and asking God for wisdom for the financial decisions that we make.
Well good luck Joe, and thanks for spreading the word. You are on the right track and the important thing is not how long it will take you, but that you get there. I believe you will get there!! Keep doing your thing.
Becoming debt free is pretty awesome and you will not regret making this journey. ๐
Love the idea but I don’t have two shiny nickles to rub together at the moment but maybe next month you can chock off Washington. I imagine this would have to be on my truck, I’m not sure the wife would want those on her car :-).
LOL No problem Paul! I see this as a long-term project anyway. It would be cool though to be able to cross Washington off the list. ๐
I’d totally do it since I’m up for registration soon, but New York State wants to double the charge of vanity plates and since I hate debt, I’m not feeling so good about shelling out that moolah.
Understood cheapskate Sandy!
Why doesn’t any state just charge a one-time, reasonable fee for getting these plates? It’s hard for me to understand why they charge you for something they only make once annually.
This project is going to be tougher than I thought but all I have to do is find ONE person, preferably someone who is debt free, to get a personal plate. One person.
I will not give up, I will see this through! ๐ Spread the word. ๐
I am trying to live without a car sooooo…..
what if I just got some running shorts with I H8 Debt on the back….
David Damron
Hey man I love it! Motivate others to get rid of their debt WHILE YOU GET A WORKOUT! ๐
I think this is going to turn into the IH8 DEBT campaign! That way people who cannot afford, or do not want to pay those outrageous fees, can still participate. Bumper stickers, t-shirts, running shorts. I could have another slogan “I Survived Debt and I got so much more than this lousy t-shirt!” A plain and simple one “I REFUSE DEBT!” Thanks for the inspiration David! I’m going to do something with this.
Its available in AZ (internet search) but its $50/year plus $2.50 shipping. It also said something about a $50 application fee.
Go with the bumperstickers! (Magnet preferrably as actual stickers devalue your vehicle).
TX limits you to 6 characters – IH8DBT is available, but alas, costs additional $50/year. Not in my budget for this year or next (snowball projects we’re OUTTA debt in January 2012). So….I’ll have to remember to check again then. I’m up for a magnet-bumper-sticker – and already have my Dave Ramsey “I’m Weird” $1 sticker ready to go! I purchased it with my TMMO membership and already affixed it to a magnet, so it’s residing on my frig at the moment. Good luck!
