I Love You Like a Blogger Roundup – 2/22

You’ll have to forgive me, I’m a bit cranky at the moment.

If you haven’t heard, winter storm Q is making its way through the Midwest (I have a brother-in-law in Omaha, Nebraska that is supposed to get up to 18 inches of snow!)  I woke up this morning to find 5 inches new snow on the ground, with a couple more yet to come.  Given the weather, I didn’t make my usual trip to the gym this morning.  Not because I didn’t want to drive around in the snow, but because I knew that at 5:30am the school district would be calling to alert us that school was either delayed by 2 hours, or closed.  So, I pulled the phone handset from my bedroom so that it ringing wouldn’t wake up Vonnie.  Sure enough, at exactly 5:30am, the phone rang – school is 2 hours late.

I HATE it when school is two hours late.  I have to stay home and make sure the kids get on the bus on time later in the morning which is a complete pain in the ass because it conflicts with meetings I’m supposed to attend at work.  I can work remotely, but talking software engineering while cooking breakfast doesn’t always work out very well.  Plus I have to find time to hit the gym later today.

Oh well, at least it’s Friday, right?  Wait, it’s Friday?  I guess that means it’s time to hand out some blogger love.  I can do that, even if I am cranky.

  1. Travis, Thank you for adding me 🙂

  2. We live in Omaha and thankfully we did not get 18 inches, but got 8. They are calling for a another storm to hit Sunday night that will bring another 8 inches. Thankfully the city (dripping sarcasm) does a GREAT job at clearing the streets and neighborhoods. So, we may be able to make it out in, oh, four days.

Glad you got less than originally expected, John. Sounds like a great weekend to stay indoors, heh? I live in a cul-de-sac and the snow plow left snow everywhere – must not have been the regular driver. Have a great weekend!

Not to rub it in but I live in Miami and I never have to deal with this. First time reading your blog and I like your stuff!

Oh, sure……you and you warm weather people think you’re sooooo cool. 🙂 Welcome to EOD Kevin, hope you’ll come back – if I can get it to work out, I have something pretty cool planned for Monday’s post!

  4. In Canada the buses run or the buses don’t run. None of this run late stuff. I am in Ontario and we see a lot of news from the Buffalo area and they are always doing late runs.

We have had 4 bus cancellations so far in 2013. The schools are open and the teachers must report but there aren’t many kids that show up. Even the kids that walk stay home because the teachers can’t cover new material when buses are cancelled. The only kids at school are the ones with working parents who are too young to stay home alone.

    • Travis says:

You mean even if the buses don’t run the kids can still come to school? That’s wild……buses and school are tied together. If the buses don’t go, school is cancelled. I learned something new about our neighbors to the north today, Jane – thanks for stopping by!

  5. Winter storm Q dropped maybe a sixteenth of an inch of snow down here in the Southeast, but that was enough to delay school/work on Friday. I went to college in Utah and it would take 12-16″ of snow to delay, let alone shut down school. Bunch of wussies out here. 🙂

    Thanks for including us, Travis.

    • Travis says:

1/16 of an inch delayed schools? Wow. Although I hear if it snows at all in Texas they just shut down until it melts too – it doesn’t pay to have and maintain the equipment needed to deal with that kind of weather because it happens so infrequently. Enjoy your weekend Johnny!

  6. Laurie says:

Yeah, we got 6 or so inches up here too. Luckily, even out here in the boonies, our county does a fabulous job of plowing and the streets here are usually done by 6a.m. We’re lucky to have a 4WD so it doesn’t affect us too much, but I still can’t wait for summer. 🙂

    • Travis says:

I live in a cul-de-sac, and I think we’re literally the LAST road in the city of Rochester to be plowed. Although I’m not going to complain too much as our snow plow driver is very careful to push the snow in between the driveways so I never have the dreaded “snowplow ridge.” Summer will be here before you know it, Laurie!

  7. Thank you for the shout out! I appreciate it! And good luck with the snowstorm. I grew up in Ohio, so I remember what dealing with that felt like. (Of course, I was a kid at the time. So I loved school delays!)
