Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 3/16

I went into my mechanical room yesterday to clean out my cats’ litter box, and found water leaking from the water heater.  We have an appliance repair service plan, so I called to have a person come look at it.  Unfortunately, he gave me bad news.  The tank had cracked,  and after 14 years of serving us faithfully, our water heater needed to be replaced.  So today I’ve been working from the kitchen table as I watch a new water heater be installed, at a price of about $1800. At least I can still fist pump for my favorite posts […] Read more »

How I Almost Missed Out On A $2100 Tax Refund

I have relied on tax preparation software to guide me through filing my tax return for the last 20 years. It’s easy to be lulled into a feeling of safety, believing the software will help you accurately fill out your tax return while identifying all your deductions and credits based on your answers. The reality is, the tax software is only as good as the answers you give it, and if you don’t have a basic understanding of what’s going on with your return you could end up missing out on a huge refund. It almost happened to me this […] Read more »

Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup -3/9

Alright, friends, I’ve finally reached my breaking point.  It happens every year, but this year I held out all the way until March.  I’m officially sick of winter.  I want no more cold, sleet, ice, snow, blizzards or snowdrifts.  I’m done shoveling.  Just done.  Bring on the spring weather, the smell of freshly cut grass and the warm sun beating down on my freshly shaven head.  I know that there’s likely a snow storm or two still in our future for the season, but at least I have a trip to Florida to look forward to in less than 3 […] Read more »

You CAN Find Out When Your Tax Refund Will Arrive!

I’m not exactly sure when they did it as I haven’t gotten a tax refund in a couple of years, but it seems the IRS may have finally implemented what we all knew was possible. Our friends at the Internal Revenue Office finally have a tool that will tell us exactly when our tax refund will hit our bank account. It used to be that you filed you tax return, and if you were due a refund you’d anxiously check your account status (or your mailbox) to see if your refund had arrived. It was a daily ritual, and each […] Read more »

Have you done your taxes yet?  I’m usually not very excited to do my taxes, as I’ve owed money the last few years.  Last year I changed my withholdings such that I was really close to breaking even.  This year, however, I will get a tax credit for a portion of the tuition paid under the American Tax Opportunity Credit.  I’m actually looking forward to doing my taxes this year! Monthly Payments Are NOT Normal!

Monthly payments can be a useful financial tool, or they could be the force of pure evil. They can help a person afford something they normally could not, or they can deceive by masking something’s true cost. I was reminded of the rules of the monthly payment game this week as I dealt with a cracked screen on my cell phone. I picked up my phone after dropping it face down on the garage floor to find it had many small cracks. Luckily the phone still worked, despite the multitude of cracks. Over the course of several days, the cracks […] Read more »

Last week I received an email containing my Costco Citibank cash back rewards check from 2017.  It’s a significant amount, totaling several hundred dollars.  It would be easy to just blow it on something meaningless, but instead we’re putting it in the bank to be used during our family vacation to Florida at the end of March.  We’re already budgeting for spending money for the trip, but adding this will give us some extra funds to make sure we have a great time. I Can’t Believe I Almost Did This….

Lack of impulse control can get you a house full of stuff you don’t need. Pair that lack of impulse control with a credit card and you’re just asking to end up neck deep in debt. Add to the mix the ease of online shopping and the road to debt ends up a slippery slope that’s easy to slide down. For those of us with weak impulse control, we have to understand that we can and will live without the things we want so desperately in the heat of the moment. Let me show you what I mean. All of […] Read more »

Switching Financial Roles

There’s an old saying about walking a mile in the shoes of someone else to gain wisdom and understanding. That’s true in many aspects of life, including your finances. I’m not talking about living a day in the life of someone significantly more or less off financially, I’m talking about your significant other. Let’s be real, as much as we might talk about doing finances together, there’s usually one person that drives the family’s finances more than the other. There may be financial meetings and discussions to keep everyone on the same page, but in most cases one person carries […] Read more »

As I was using my snowblower, I noticed that one of the three gears ceased to work.  I got the snowblower for free from my parents, so any money I have to put into it is really not that big of a deal.  However, with spring seemingly nearby I’d like to hold off on spending money on this season.  I have a feeling that other gears may stop working as I continue to use it, but if I could wait and deal with it when utility bills drop of during the warmer, but not hot springtime months, it would certainly […] Read more »

Who’s watching the Super Bowl this weekend?  I’m bummed my Vikings won’t be in it, but I’ll be watching.  I was thinking of firing up the smoker and making something, but last week I spent 6 hours in front of it and what I made didn’t turn out.  In my defense, it was something I never made before.  But, putting in that amount of effort, and sinking about $50 into it between the meat, charcoal and wood, has left a bad taste in my mouth (get it?).  I just don’t feel like lighting it up again this weekend.  I guess […] Read more »

What You Need To Know About Filling Out The FAFSA

A college education is an expensive adventure, and paying for it requires all the help you can get. Grants or low interest loans from the federal government can help, but in order to get them you first have to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Filling out a government form can be a time consuming and painful ordeal. Fortunately, the FAFSA isn’t that bad especially if you’ve done some prep work ahead of time. The FAFSA can be completed online, but before you begin, here’s what you need to know about filling out the FAFSA. FSA […] Read more »

With one door closing, another opens.  The bad news is that my Vikings lost in the NFC championship game last weekend.  The good news is that football season is coming to a conclusion which means my Sundays are now free to get some indoor projects done before Spring arrives.  On the list is repainting two bathrooms, and installing a closet organizer in our master bedroom closet.   None of these will be that expensive, because I’ll be doing them myself. Looking forward to being productive! Fist pump for DIY projects, and my favorite  posts of the week! Posts That Make Me […] Read more »
