I Love You Like a Blogger Roundup – 02/15

Another Valentine’s Day has come and gone.  Vonnie and I agreed not to get all caught up in the usual flowers, stuffed animals and sentimental cards.    Maybe when we’re out of debt we will re-instate a small Valentine’s Day gift exchange, but for now we just don’t think it is the wisest use of our money.  Here’s what I did do for her:

Made her breakfast:  School day mornings are crazy busy.  I busted ass to get all the usual stuff done in order to make her and the kids a great breakfast, including heart shaped pancakes. We already had everything I needed except pancake mix.  Out of pocket expense:  $1.64.

A little love note:  I packed a lunch for her (as I always do), and I  included a little note  that said simply, “Happy Heart Day.  I Heart You.  Love, Travis.”  Out of pocket expense: FREE.

Made her dinner: I grilled ribeye steaks, made baked potatoes and vegetables.  We also cracked open a bottle of sparkling wine, and had homemade apple crisp for dessert. All I needed to pick up were the steaks and some potatoes.  Out of pocket expense: $14.77

We enjoyed great food, and a Thursday evening spending time with each other.  At the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.  🙂

After a very enjoyable Valentine’s Day, it only feels appropriate to send love out to some fellow bloggers.   I enjoy reading many blogs, but the ones I love the most are those that simply inspire me to keep going.   To try to do better.  To try to BE better.    My favorite posts this week fit that description perfectly.

Thanks for the mention, Travis, I appreciate it! Your Valentine’s day sounds perfect, like ours was too. I love going out to eat, but Valentine’s dinner at home is the best. You racked up some huge hubby points with the breakfast and the note too, I’m sure. :-). Good job!

    • Travis says:

I certainly hope so, Laurie – I LOVE racking up hubby points! I’m not much of an eating out fan anyway – I normally look at the bill and think that I could have made what we just ate cheaper, and it would have been better. 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to comment…..I’m hoping there will be a MN blogger meeting in March!

Your Valentine’s day sounded better than any other!! Who wants to wait in long lines to sit down and dine? Not me! Your Valentine gifts to your wife sounded absolutely perfect both emotionally and financially!! You are a true inspiration! Have a great weekend!

    • Travis says:

Thanks, Monica! Who needs more Chocolate laying around the house when we’re both trying to lean up a bit anyway, right? It’s been a loooong time since I’ve had a steakhouse make a steak better than what I can do at home with my grill. Ribeye steak, seasoned with all my favorite spices and cooked to a perfect medium? AND with my wonderful family sitting around the kitchen table joking around having a good time? It was perfect!

We went to my favorite restaurant. It was yummy!

You and Vonnie are one of those couples a girl can’t help but look up to. Sounds like you had a great Valentine’s Day together. Thanks for including my post from the Debt Movement!

  5. Andrea says:

Thanks for the mention, and yay for a Valentine’s Day that wasn’t out of control with spending! Sounds like you did everything right!

As a person of the single persuasion, I did nothing, and it was awesome. 😀

    • Travis says:

Yay for sure, Andrea! I’m so glad I’m not waking up today thinking, “I spent HOW MUCH yesterday?” Haha, I’m glad your Valentine’s Day was awesome – I should have shot off a text to you…I think I still have your phone number from when I was your wakeup call. 🙂

  6. We did nothing terribly special, other than to just to enjoy an evening free of being plugged into the computers. We’re going out tomorrow night to go wine tasting.

    • Travis says:

Being unplugged is *hard* since many of us have become so wired into our electronic worlds. I know I have. I LOVE wine tastings – sounds like a great post Valentine’s Day activity. I’ll have to look around for one for Vonnie and I to go to now that you’ve got me thinking about it!

  7. I love your simple, yet awesome ideas for V-day. This year Mr. FBS and I agreed to a simple dinner this weekend. We are on a no-spending challenge in order to pay off ALL of our debt by April, so we wanted to keep it low-key. He did, however, sneak in a little gift he purchased with the little bit of fun money we have for 3 months. It is the best gift ever, because it came out of his limited funds. 🙂

    • Travis says:

Out of debt by April…..that’s AWESOME, FBS! I think it’s great that Mr. FBS snuck in a present….it’s soo fun to see what people can come up with for gifts when they’re given a limited amount of money – it really requires people use some creativity which makes for THE BEST gifts! Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I wrote my wife a nice letter, then as I came home from work, i went to the grocery store to get dinner that I planned on making. My wife surprised me with dinner that she made, so I had to push my dinner to tonight. Oh well and I only spend $20. Best money I have spent in a while!

  9. ND Chic says:

That sounds like a perfect Valentine’s day. We always stay home and cook. I spent years waiting tables so the last place I want to be is a restaurant.

    • Travis says:

Ah, I see that working in the restaurant industry has given you a similar perspective of dining out on holidays, ND Chic – hope yours was equally as awesome!

  10. Cassi says:

Yay, saving money! I spent my Valentines Day preforming Alice in Wonderland, so I spent nothing, but I also was at school from 7am until 10 pm. I kept forgetting it was Valentines day!

    • Travis says:

You illustrate a point that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, Cassi – one of the best ways to keep from overspending is to just to stay busy! Hope you had a great time performing Alice in Wonderland!
