Quality, Inexpensive Clothes CAN Be Found At Club Stores

My new Minnesota Twins Jersey!

I’m not into brand names. I’m definitely not into brand name clothes; example: paying hundreds of dollars for a pair of jeans. My butt looks just fine without bling across the back pockets. I’m more than content cruising the aisles of Walmart, Target, Old Navy and the occasional trip to Kohl’s when I can combine a 30% off coupon with sale prices.

I do recognize that occasionally I do sacrifice some amount of quality in favor of paying less. For the most part, I come out ahead for my money. Sometimes I get a cheap pair of shorts that rip after a few month’s of wear, but on the other hand I can buy an entire wardrobe of Old Navy jeans for the price of one blingy butt jeans. Occasionally, I encounter a combination of quality and price that makes me throw the item in the cart and run for the checkout counter before someone notices a mistake and marks up the price.

Just such a perfect storm of price and high quality occurred over the weekend.

I was walking through Sam’s Club when I noticed a display of Minnesota Twins jerseys priced at just $21. I liked the color and design, and I’m a sucker for baseball jerseys as I think I look good wearing them. Way better than blingy butt jeans. I searched through the pile and found my size. In the cart it went, and I was off to the checkout counter..

I didn’t realize just what I had purchased until I got home.

I thought that I had just bought one of those knock off jerseys that might look good for a season and then have the thread unraveling, or the lettering start to flake off. But when I pulled it out of the bag to show my wife, closer inspection revealed some qualities I hadn’t noticed inside of Sam’s Club.

  • Official MLB Merchandise : The tag on the shirt stated it was official merchandise of Major League Baseball. I also found the official patch sewn onto the shirt.
  • Stitched Emblem : The team name across the front of the shirt was not one of those adhesive patches, it was stitched on the shirt. Nothing to flake off.

This isn’t the first time we’ve purchased some quality clothing items from a club store like Sam’s Club or Costco. Last year my wife bought several angle cut shirts that she absolutely loved. They looked great, held up well, and cost under $20. I’ve also purchased some running gloves, which my son found in the closet during the winter and decided they were now his. He could text with them, and because they were tight fitting they worked well for driving. I also check out both locations for summertime t-shirts for every day use usually clocking in at just over $10.

Official merchandise shirts usually sell for $60 and up (when there’s a player’s name on the back as well), and I got this one for $21. I don’t know if this was one of those rare deals that are used to help get people in the doors, or if there’s something different about them that make them slightly less quality than what you’d get at official MLB retail outlets. What I do know is I’ve paid more for less quality, AND my new jersey is a much better value than blingy butt jeans any day of the week.

Do you buy clothes at club stores? What do you think of their quality?

  1. Sounds like you got a deal. We have purchased clothes from Costco before and have been happy with cost and quality. It’s been a mix of name brands and their brand. I have also picked up some team gear at great prices.

  2. We’re not buying clothes unless necessary b/c of the debt payoff goal, but we constantly see terrific deals on quality clothing at the club stores. Especially for guys, it seems. Once the debt is gone, we’ll be doing some serious clothes shopping at Sam’s and Costco.

I actually find the opposite, Laurie…it seems to me that 3/4ths of the clothes at Costco are for women. But that probably varies by location – thanks for your comment!
