student debtMYTH:  You Have To Go Into Debt To Get An Education

Can you be a student without a student loan?  Some people say it’s not possible, while others prove them wrong every year.  Granted, the percentage of those diving head first into student debt is astounding, but with savings in America being low to negative, it comes as no surprise.  I think America needs a paradigm shift.  Americans have super inflated the value of a degree, therefore declaring it worthwhile to go into loads of debt to get one.  I think a degree is important but I do not think it is important enough to swim in the sea of bondage it creates, giving you immediate stress upon graduation.

Stress can be so overwhelming that it can cause you to make decisions, that should be considered with care, to be made in haste.  For instance, because of the added pressure, you may take the first job offer you get instead of waiting for the one you deserve the most.  Student loans hang out for a LOOOOONG time too.  What if there was another way?

College Planning VS Student Loans (which one is the more responsible choice?)

  1. Planning is thinking first, and acting second.
  2. Getting a loan is acting first, and planning second.

Don’t pick one based on what everyone else is doing.  Pick the one that makes the most financial sense.

The most responsible answer is so obvious. (I am slightly biased, but having a plan is common sense, is it not?) ;)

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.“  – Benjamin Franklin

Be assured that it gives much more pain to the mind to be in debt, than to do without any article whatever which we may seem to want.” – Thomas Jefferson

(Thomas Jefferson knew the pain of debt first hand.)

What Are Your Options?

  1. Working to save for tuition while in high school – Now I realize that working in your teenage years may not be very desirable.  It is also important not to work too much so that you have enough time to study hard for high school, but if you save for 2 years, you could save almost half of what the average students have in student loans upon graduation.  ($22,500)  (Saving $100 a week to fund an ESA or other Educational IRA’s for 2 years will give you more than $10,000 without counting interest.Maybe you could talk to your parents about matching what you save to help you out if possible.
  2. Parent funded savings account for college - (not as popular but I think it is the BEST method!) I personally think that this is the best option if it’s not too late.  As a parent, I think that everything I can do to set my kids up for success should be done.  If you can’t afford it then you’re not obligated but if you can then why not right?  For the record, if a parent has not done this but later feels guilty and wants to fund their kids college debt is not the way to do it.  You shouldn’t weaken your own financial situation by going into debt.  This is why a plan is important, and why we need to start thinking about these things before it is too late.
  3. Scholarships And Grants – This option should always be applied to any college plan.  There are FREE scholarships and grants all over the place to be taken advantage of.  If you fill out hundreds of applications you will receive some monetary assistance!
  4. Pay-as-you-go plan – In a “microwave, get rich quick, must have it now society”, this option is frowned upon.  We want everything now with little to no effort, but the true key to becoming successful in anything is slow and steady.  Because of debt we have convinced ourselves that having something now is more important that being able to actually afford it.  I am currently taking a class each semester until we can afford for me to go full time.  (which will occur after completion of baby step 3: Fully Funded Emergency Fund of $15,000)
  5. Take a year or two off after high school to save – I can already hear the groans and boos, but hear me out.  It seems as though teens choose a degree just to choose a degree instead of choosing one to take advantage of their passions and abilities.  Let’s face it, most teens have no idea what they are truly good at or what there passionate about with so little life experience.  Perhaps this is why it is so easy to find a student who has a degree in something they are not using.  (They have that piece of paper though right?)  The piece of paper only has value if it can be used.  Otherwise it is useless!
  6. Go for the education instead of the piece of paper – Education is more important than diploma. Education to me is about what you learn not how much you learn.  The system in place wishes to diversify your talents when I believe your studies could be more centrally focused around what you want to become an expert in.  I think we learn a little of everything in high school for a well rounded education.  In college it’s time to specialize.  How is a science class going to make me more successful in the world of finance.  You can always take the fill in classes you need for a diploma later after you have become an expert in your career of choice. (This option can not always be used for specific career paths, like doctors, lawyers, and other high tech specialists.)
  7. Pick a cheaper school to lower your tuition costs – Pedigree isn’t what it used to be.  While some would disagree, a degree is no more valuable just because you paid more for it.  Pick a school close to home and you can save tons of money.  Debt is not worth what you pay for it!
  8. Read, read, and read some more – No matter what you should do this.  Keep that brain stimulated and learn everything you can while you can.  You don’t have to go to college to learn, you just have to possess a desire to excel.  You might not be able to be a doctor by just reading but there are SO MANY other careers where you can.  With technology and the internet, the possibilities are no longer conventional.  Become an expert in your field!

“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.”Mark Twain

College Planning Is Part Of The Total Money Makeover

Planning to send your kids to college one day doesn’t have to be a difficult task.  In The Total Money Makeover parents can plan for their kids college costs once they get to baby step 5, right before paying off the house.

Dave Ramsey suggests that you use tax-favored plans.  He says that you should first save in an Educational Savings Account (ESA), which will allow you to save $2,000 (after tax) per year, per child.  That’s about $166 a month per child.  (If you don’t have car payments this should be EASY huh?)

If you want to save above that, OR you do not meet the income requirements for an ESA, you can use a 529 plan that leaves you in control of the mutual funds at all times.

Avoid plans that:

  • freeze your options
  • change based on the age of your child

He also suggests that after you’ve done all that, you could move to an UTMA or UGMA plan.  (Uniform TRANSFER/GIFT to Minors Act) What you should know about these plans:

  • One way to save but not the best of all other options
  • Account is listed in kids name
  • Parent or guardian manages account until:
    • UTMA – child is 21
    • UGMA – child is 18

Three “NEVERS” of College Saving

  1. Never save for college using insurance
  2. Never save for college using savings bonds
  3. Never pre-pay for college tuition

Do you have any student loan stories?  Would you have done it all differently if you could do it again?  Share your thoughts…

That Is The Question!

I have not announced this here on EOD yet, but thought that today would be the best time to do so.  Alana and I are having another baby, due to arrive on October 26th to be exact.  I am very excited about this and today we find out whether we are having a boy or a girl.  I LOVE BEING A DAD, it is the best gift EVER!   What Do I Hope We Are Having?  Honestly it really doesn’t matter to me.  Either way I will be excited just the same.  I do hope that my wife is able to have the little girl she has always wanted, but she has even said either way, she will be pleased.  So if we had to say one way or the other, we would both say we want a girl next.  So at 10a.m. this morning we shall find out!!

I Have To Slow My Blog Roll

Well, some of you may have noticed that last week, I didn’t post as much.  In fact I only really posted one, had a video post, and offered you a guest post.  I kind of figured it was going to happen, but I wanted to ride the wave as long as I could.  I did, and it was fun!  Real fun!  In the process I got behind on some other things in my life and now it is time to step back up to the plate to take care of them.

Things I need to do:

  • finish remodeling the upstairs – my in-laws have been kind enough to help us remodel our house, as their gift to us…and I need to get on it, so it can be done!
  • work on organizing my time – I have to learn how to manage my time in a way that will allow me to maximize my efforts.  I want to accomplish A LOT each day, so this is a MUST!
  • hitting the gym – I really need to focus on this so that I can be around a long time to watch my beautiful children grow.  This is probably one of my hardest to stick to goals, but it must become a lifestyle change and a priority.  Now is as good a time as any!
  • find a another full-time job – As you know, I work for tips.  Tips have not been great lately, so instead of wait around for the economy to get better, I have decided to move on.  I am looking for full-time employment and I plan to keep my delivery job part-time to bring in extra money.  I am also considering doing some pressure washing on the side over the summer.
  • prepare for my speaking engagement – In September I have been asked to speak at Sweet Briar College, for one hour, and this requires some preparation.  (I will be talking about budgeting, savings, buying a home, and managing/avoiding student loans.) I have a few things I have to submit before July 7th, and really need to start working on my message and delivery as well.  This is my chance to really dig my heels in and spread my message to even more people.
  • focus on my public speaking class – It goes without saying that this class will help me with the above goal.  The more I put into it the more I will get out of it.  I actually have to deliver an Impromptu speech to my class this evening.  We were given some freedom to choose our topic, and I have chosen to discuss why I hate debt so much.  SURPRISED? Another thing about this class is that it will make me a better writer as well.  I have already learned so much about writing, and truthfully that is the reason I decided not to publish the first installment of my new series.  I want to make it better so it helps you the most.
  • stabilizing my sleep habits – this area of my life probably causes me more problems than any other area.  I would say that if I could get this one area stabilized, it would help me get better in all of the others.  I DO NOT sleep!  I have done a sleep study and got nothing from it.  Sometimes I will just lie in bed, tortured by my burning eyes and intense desire to sleep, but can’t fall asleep to save my life!  I need to put myself on a strict sleep regiment, requiring me to wake up and go to sleep at the same times every single day.  I also plan to visit my doctor.
  • KILL OUR REMAINING DEBT – This is something that in order for me to knock it out, I need to become intensely focused on KILLING it!  It needs to be gone!  It has hung around for too long!  It is what is keeping me from starting my financial coaching business and experiencing financial peace for my family.  Working more, is the short term solution, and is necessary at this point in time.  With sacrifice comes rewards!

I love writing for this blog!  I could spend everyday doing it, but the truth is I do not get paid for writing this blog.  One day I hope to make enough money to justify spending so much time on EOD.  I want to make this site the go-to-place for people trying to get out of debt, not just a place for people to come and read a bunch of filler articles so that I can say I write full time.  I want to give you quality at it’s best, and it is something I am working on.

I am collaborating with one of my readers to eventually publish the EOD Deluxe Budget Version 3.0 with lots of new features to make your life easier.  I am also trying to meet up with a friend of mine to help me with the look I desire for EOD.  I really need to pump out that series that I started and I want it to be off the hook!  I also have a few guest posts that I really need to write as well. I have a debt free interview coming soon as well from a twitter friend of mine.  Stay on the look out, things will be happening, just at a slower rate with an interest on quality instead of quantity.

I hope that switching back to writing part-time does not mean that I will lose any of you.  I truly enjoy that you have decided that what I have done here is valuable to you, and my only goal is to make it better and more valuable.  After all I do not write for myself, I write for YOU!  I also do not want this to sound as though I want the ideas or questions to stop coming.  Those are often where I get my best articles from, so thanks, and keep them coming!!  I am going to try and publish 2 to 3 articles a week, and if I have time for more, or am feeling so inspired, you will get more.

What About This Week?

I will probably be a little light this week as well, so that I can play catch up.  I do have a guest post I plan to post as well as a follow up by me concerning that guest post.

Now it is time for me to just do it.  I talk all the time on this blog about taking control of your own problems, by resolving to fix them yourself.  Instead of complaining that I just don’t have enough time in the day, or that I am not making enough money, or that my debt just won’t go away, or complaining about my weight, I am taking control.  I CAN MAKE THESE GOALS HAPPEN, and I will!

What do you think?  Is my decision a deal breaker for you, the subscriber?  What do you think of my goals, and can you give me any advice that will be valuable to me in achieving those goals?  I want to know!

Table of contents for Motivation 101

  1. Motivation 101 – YOU CAN DO IT TOO!
  2. Motivation 101 – Saving To Buy, Instead Of Buying To Slave!
  3. Motivation 101 – What You Believe, Is What You Achieve!

Dawn and I have been going back and forth for days now.  I wanted to share with you the difference between her and I, mainly by pointing out why I think she is wrong in her thinking.  Her thinking is how most people look at it, and what I am trying to do here at EOD is to show people that there is another way that provides more options.  I believe that more options translates into a higher success rate.  A lot of people limit themselves by not realizing their options.  I think Dawn dwells on the problem instead of providing a solution.  I do not doubt her well intentions, I just think she’s wrong.  If she believes this and she writes about money, then I know others do as well.

A Perfect Example Of Victim Thinking And Limiting Yourself

Dawn: “I’m sorry, but if you have the misfortune of just a high school diploma, the kind of work you can get may be just at checkout at Walmart. People at that income level do indeed live paycheck to paycheck and it is rather hard to pay the rent, utilities, etc. without going into debt, especially if you live in an expensive state like I do, here in CT.”

“But i think that people who see the crisis we’re in today as a one-dimensional problem solely caused by individuals who wrack up debt, often because they have no other choice, have blinders on.”

NO OTHER CHOICE?” That is the very reason we disagree.  She thinks that people have no other choices and should accept the notion, that’s just how things are.  Limiting yourself by telling yourself that you have no options, will give you exactly that…NO OPTIONS! What you believe, is what you achieve!!

Misfortune of just a High School Diploma?”  I consider a college education to be valuable and an advantage but it is certainly not the only way one can become successful! It is this line of thinking that keeps someone believing that they can’t do something when really they can! What you believe, is what you achieve!!

Me: “My point was this. If I can do something OTHER than live on minimum wage and I have only a high school diploma, then others can do the same. I am not special! Instead of accepting my struggle I have decided to be proactive in how my life turns out. It’s really that simple. People can educate themselves about anything using the internet and resources from the library to help make their way. Anything is possible and that includes living without debt.”

Me And The Victim Mentality Do Not Get Along

Dawn: “Lax bank regulation played a big role in the mess we’re in and bankers, having the training and lending knowledge, understood the risks better than lower income people trying to get ahead. The banks were out for profit only and by looking the other way, made it possible for people who could ill afford to purchase a home to in fact do so. If the banks said “no,” we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

Here we go blaming others again! Obviously Dawn wasn’t paying attention when Washington put pressure on mortgage lenders to give loans to people that shouldn’t have got them.  Also, she is suggesting that people blindly sign their name without understanding or knowing what it is that they are signing. Rule number 1: Understand anything and everything that you put your name on, OR do not complain about the end result of you not knowing!  If you understand that rule then you understand why it is not someone else’s fault that YOU signed your name!

Me: “You believe you are helping people and I respect that. You are encouraging the problem by telling them that what they have been doing is NOT their fault, and I am saying maybe it’s time for people to start examining their habits, and try something else. You want to place blame and I want to empower people to take control of their finances. I like my way because I know my way works and your way just continues the problem. The victim mentality is a form of slavery and I am trying to free the slaves from their own peril.

Who Is Really The One That Is Single-Mindlessly Focused?

Dawn: “Brad, I really think that you and I are on the same page…we both want people to take responsibility for their financial well being. Its not something that’s often taught in schools.

The difference, I think, is that I also work to inform people of various other forces at work that are often beyond the ability of the average person to control. I’m talking about various government regulations (or the lack thereof), global economic events and just plain bad luck. You seem to be single-mindlessly focused on personal responsibility without acknowledging that sometimes, despite the very best effort and intentions, $*%# happens.”

I wrapped up the conversation with this:

Me: “You are right Dawn, I personally think it is a waste of time to try and figure out who was at fault. The bottom line for me is that when people look at their situation and say how can I make it better, instead of who caused it, I think they can be more productive towards defeating the enemies that cause the bad luck and other various forms of excuses that you named off. SO WHAT if the Government does or doesn’t have regulations concerning credit cards…don’t use credit cards and empower yourself to live without the crutch that has become credit. You seem to be overlooking the fact that if you have a plan then those things that happen, don’t really affect you all that much.

I personally believe that you are making people less active in winning because you are too concerned with having them focus on everything being out of their control, instead of allowing them to see HOW to climb those obstacles. People don’t want to know that there are obstacles, they already know that, they want to know how to overcome them!

Now for why I consider myself to be an expert in this area. I USED to do what you do! I USED to look at the supposed problems! I USED to focus on why things were happening to me! It wasn’t until I started reading more from Dave Ramsey, Dan Miller, Brian Tracy, and John G. Miller that I realized I was wasting my time, AND when I began to ask myself different questions. You should really read a book called QBQ- The Question Behind The Question, because I believe you focus on asking the wrong questions.

My life and direction changed completely once I started to think differently. I actually started defeating my obstacles instead of looking for who put them there. I now believe in myself and my ability to secure my own future, without relying on Washington or anyone else to put a rule in place that will protect me. What I learned is that there is hope and empowerment in realizing I do not have to accept your ideas and solutions.

With all of that said, I would like to respectfully say that we are hardly alike. Maybe you should re-examine which one of us is more “single-mindlessly focused”, since you are the one that is in the box, and I am the one outside of it telling people there are more options where I am.”

END

Lesson: Don’t limit yourself by accepting what you think you can’t do, go find out that you can do it!  What you believe, is what you achieve!!

Do you agree or disagree with me?  Let me know, and as I was with Dawn, please be respectful!  I would love to hear your opinion.

Returning Thoughts

I am in my car a significant amount of time.  I have tons of time to think about so many things.  One of the questions I find myself asking is “What in the world do people say when they see my car?”.  My first response is usually laughter because I imagine what people might say who would never be caught dead in such a car.  To make it even more amusing I have a DaveRamsey.com sticker on my bumper that says, “Act Your Wage”, beside another “Anti-Debt” sticker.

To me this makes TOTAL sense, but the average person might say something like, “Hey look, that guy is acting his wage and from the looks of it he doesn’t make much!”.  Hahahahahaha!  It’s real funny until you consider how much we are actually saving each month.  We’ll get to that in a minute, first let me tell you what I currently drive.  I proudly drive a 1985 Honda CRX.  Honestly, for a 24 year old car it’s not all that bad, but it is missing some body work here and there.

Do I Care What People Think?

I used to care, but not anymore.  Society encourages us to try and keep up with the Joneses, so as did many, I fell into the trap too.  Coupled with our desire to “need” more than we could pay for, it was real easy to justify such a purchase without even considering what we were giving up in the process.  Would I enjoy driving a newer, easier on the eyes, smoother riding car with power steering?  Absolutely!!  The question then becomes, “Life is too short and I work too hard, don’t I deserve to have a “brand new” vehicle?”.  The short answer is that you only deserve what you can honestly afford, and you still have to consider your priorities.  If your car payment is made but your struggling to feed the family you can not afford the car.

For me it has become very simple.  If you have to go into debt in order to get something, then you can’t afford whatever it is, hence the fact that you would have to borrow to get it.  Many would disagree with that until they turned blue, but let’s simplify it even more.  Suppose for a second that credit cards did not exist.  If you walk into a store to buy something only to realize that you spent the rest of your money on the bills, the truth of the matter is that you can not afford anything because you don’t have any money.  Some would still argue that there are more complex issues to consider, it’s not that easy.

There is nothing complex about distinguishing a need from a want and making a mature decision.   I have decided to care more about planning our future than what someone who is broke might think of me because I am driving a $500 beater car. (it looks like a hippo tried to take a bite out of the side.)  Although I would much rather drive something newer, the sacrifice that I am making now will be more beneficial than the feeling I would get if I had a white BMW with leather seats.  A feeling does not pay my bills, take care of my family, or put food on my table, but saving money and making smarter financial decisions do.  I will work on the feeling later when I have plenty of wiggle room to do so comfortably.

Burden Or Blessing?

If you have a car payment and are obligated to make that payment NO MATTER WHAT, even though it may not seem like a burden now, it could easily transform into one in the future.  How many people are upside down on their car loans right now because they could not predict a rapidly declining economy?  Certainly, this is a burden.  The truth is that when you put yourself in this position, you are limiting your options so severely that the only real options are bad ones.  Burden!  It is better to make a decision based on strength rather than weakness.

Consider the alternative.  You have a nice $2,000-$4,000 paid for car that has already lost most of it’s value.  (Someone else took the hit on the depreciation.) Now add the current economic decline and ask yourself if you are experiencing a burden or a blessing.  You don’t owe anyone any money.  Blessing! The economic crisis is easier to manage when you don’t have that extra chunk of money going towards car payments, higher insurance premiums, and higher property taxes.  Blessing!  In extreme hardship, you have the option to sell the car if you have to, and even if you do take a small loss from what you paid, you will have that cash in hand to get you that much further.  Blessing!

Our Car Snapshot

Before:

  • Paid for Volvo
  • Debt-Infested Vibe (Monthly payment of approx. $290, property taxes of approx. $250/yr
  • Insurance for both vehicles was $146 per month

After:

  • Paid for Volvo
  • Paid for Honda (saving $290 per month plus tons of interest, with property taxes well under $50 per year.  We no longer owe someone else $8500)
  • Insurance for both vehicles is approx. $53 per month

I’ll leave you with this final thought.  If you answer this question honestly you will get the most logical answer every time.  Is owing someone money better than NOT owing someone money? There is only one right answer. Even if you agree with using debt you must acknowledge that not owing someone money is ultimately better.

My recent upgrade to a newer vehicle without going into debt.

How Can We Love Our Children More?

That’s How!
Our Children Really Are The Future
If you have children I can not think of anything as important as teaching them how to manage money at a very early age.  Think about it for a second.  If you would have learned about money at a young age you could have avoided so many of the [...]
