Once a month I may get something from a company that wants to partner with Enemy of Debt in some way. The one I received today was a little different but not really.  She claimed to read a blog of mine, but maybe she needed to read more of them before contacting me.  Her company was nothing more than a debt CONsolidation and negotiation company.  My response was respectful, but to the point.

The OFFER:

Hi! I was checking out an article called “I Hate Debt, What About You” on your site www.enemyofdebt.com, and was thinking that I have a resource you may find valuable. My name is Colleen *****, and I represent ****.com, which is a website dedicated to helping people relieve themselves of the financial burdens that come with debt. I think this could be a great tool for your people wanting to spend less money in their daily lives! This site provides people heavily in debt a way out, without ruining their credit for years. This way, if they would like to make some great financial decisions, like using money more wisely after being laid off, they will be able to do so. By providing a link from your site to ours with words like how to decrease credit card debt, you may find that your readers find great advice for reducing their debts, as well as being wiser with their money in the future. Please E-mail me back and let me know what you think of the idea. Thanks for your time!

Colleen

My Response:

Hi Colleen,

First I would like to thank you for contacting me.  I have to respectfully decline working with you for a number of reasons.  For starters I do not believe in teaching anyone to pay a company to solve their financial problems.  (i.e. debt consolidation, debt management, debt negotiating companies.)  It has been proven that families already have that ability to do the same thing themselves without paying fees in the process.  Not to mention it does nothing for the families ability to remain out of financial trouble because the behavior is not addressed.  Statistics tell us that most people that use these companies go right back to where they were.  It’s the same when someone pays off a credit card.  All they see is a zero balance and an opportunity to go buy something else they can’t really afford.

I am also not a believer in the credit system, or the FICO score.  That score is derived from the constant accumulation of debt, and as you can see I am the ENEMY of DEBT, not the Ally of Debt.  The reason people are finding themselves in their current situation is because they believed the MYTH that told them to go get debt in order to “build” their credit score.  Instead of building their credit, I believe they should be building their wealth.  Imagine a land where people use wealth to buy things rather than debt.  Ahhh…utopia!

Your company may have good intentions, but I just cannot work with anyone who has conflicting beliefs.  Integrity is most important to me and I will not jeopardize that for anything, especially a few bucks.  I am very strict with this policy but I thank you again for your offer.

Additional Thoughts On Debt CONsolidation

Stay away from these companies!  Learn how to get out of debt yourself, and without paying expensive fees to do so.  You have the ability to negotiate your own debt settlement.  The money paid in fees could be used to pay off debt!  Using these companies is just like sweeping dirt under the rug.  The dirt (your financial habits) is still there, it’s just that no one can see it-including yourself.  ATTACK the problem, not the symptom by addressing what caused the problem in the first place.  Get rid of the dirt, don’t hide it!

Lesson For The Day

Take control of YOUR life and hold yourself personally accountable for your mistakes.

EOD Budget has finally been upgraded!!
(EOD Deluxe Budget Version 2.0)

If you have been wondering where I have been, here is your answer.  I have been working hard to upgrade the EOD Budget so that your budgeting experience will be easier, better, and faster!  I have added lots of new features including an Allocated Spending Plan and a Checkbook Registry.  I have added some new content to the Savings Worksheets, as well as implemented a color coded system so you know what areas need your information.  Yellow cells are the only cells you need to enter your info in.  Mint Green cells have formulas and need no special entries by you.

I hope you enjoy this upgrade and I would love to hear from you.  Just bookmark this post and leave any comments and suggestions in the comments section below.  If you think of something that could make this budget better let me know.  I have tried to look it over with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything works the way it is supposed to.  If you find something that does not seem to be working properly, please contact me!  Thanks!

Enemy of Debt is the place to come for your budgeting needs.  Please tell a friend about this free download so they can benefit from it too!!  Please Enjoy and Happy Budgeting!

That’s How!

Our Children Really Are The Future

If you have children I can not think of anything as important as teaching them how to manage money at a very early age.  Think about it for a second.  If you would have learned about money at a young age you could have avoided so many of the financial pitfalls that most of us deal with.  I know I would have loved to learn this stuff early on.  It would have kept me from paying extensive amounts of “Stupid Tax”, as Dave Ramsey calls it.  Stupid Tax is money that we pay because we do something stupid with our money.  For example, when you buy a car right off the showroom floor, the stupid tax is the money that you lose because of the car depreciating quickly.  One way to avoid Stupid Tax in this situation is to NOT buy a brand new car.  Instead by a used car and let the person before you pay the Stupid Tax.

With all of the myths that are spread in our ever growing “spend more than you make” society, it is important to debunk these myths before they become engraved in your child’s mind.  As always, Dave Ramsey has developed a very good system to help you do just this.  This system is called Financial Peace Jr., and is intended for children ages 3-12.

We Should Set Them Up For Success, Not Failure.

By simply investing a little bit of time preparing our kids for financial responsibility we can save them years of struggle.  We all know that living paycheck to paycheck is NO FUN!  For just $20 we can change the way our family tree branches out, and ensure that even our children’s children have the tools needed to win and prosper.  By now we know that the schools do not even come close to teaching our children about how to manage money, so do not leave it up to them.  The effort will be well worth it in the end.  We have already purchased Financial Peace Jr. for our son and he is only 2 years old.  We have even started to incorporate giving him money to put in his piggy bank when he cleans up his toys.  He has even used a little bit of his savings to buy his Grandma a birthday present.  He bought her a $3 picture cube, with HIS money.  Does he fully understand how all of this works?  Of course not, but he will.  You should consider buying Financial Peace Jr. today and spreading the love early on.

Financial Peace Jr. includes:

  • Commission Worksheet (Dry-Erase Board) – Keep a record of all of the jobs your child has done and how much money he or she earned each week.
  • Saving to Buy with Cash (Dry-Erase Board) –Your child can choose one item to buy with cash, and when he or she has saved enough to reach the goal they can purchase the item.
  • Envelope System (Save, Spend, Give) – Placed the money earned each week in the envelopes so your child knows exactly where his or her money is.
  • Clip and Carry Coin Case – Helps your child keep track of his or her spending money and helps you to monitor your child’s spending.
  • Instruction Manual – A guide for effectively using the kit to teach your children.
  • Instructional Audio Cassette – Provides additional instructions for you and your child.

If you know who Dave Ramsey is, then you know that he is pretty comprehensive in his approach.  For adults he has developed a 13 week video based series to tackle everything from saving, budgeting, and buying to insurance, career choices, and giving.  Additionally, he has also created a website for kids that has interactive books, fun games and puzzles for kids to use.  Junior’s Clubhouse is an awesome way for you to let your kids learn and have fun at the same time.  Learning about how to manage money doesn’t have to be boring, and Dave Ramsey proves it.

Some facts from daveramsey.com:

“According to Opinion Research Corp. 95 percent of pre-teens and 91 percent of teens get money from their parents or relatives to spend as they please but only 20 percent of these teens say they save the money as they receive it. With more than 47 percent of children having a television in their room (The Annenberg Public Policy Center), children are being targeted by advertising more than in the past.”

“The sooner kids start learning how to save and manage their money the better off they will be in life.  Financial Peace Jr. does a great job of teaching kids the basic principles of saving money.  It is so important that children learn the basics especially in today’s world where emphasis is on spending not saving,” said Matt Woodburn, vice-president of Dave Ramsey’s company.  “This kit also allows parents to spend quality time with their children while teaching them about money.”

Love your children by preparing them with great financial management skills.  Good luck!

**If anyone has actually used Financial Peace Jr. with their children and would like to share their experience, please do.  Got tips and advice?  Share your knowledge in the comments section.**

Here Is Your Financial Blueprint
courtesy of Enemy of Debt
created by Brad Chaffee

Well the time has finally come! You no longer have any excuse at all as to not having a budget.  I have created a worksheet for you to use to make budgeting fast and easy.  It is up to you to take advantage of it.  I have included a savings worksheet for you as well.  Remember a budget isn’t a device to control you, it is a device used to control your money.

Whether you use it to spend irrationally or to manage responsibly, the point is to spend it knowingly. Plan every dollar in advance so you are in control.  This budget is only version 1.  Later versions will have a few more worksheets included to help you further.  For example, I am working on a debt snowball worksheet, an allocated spending plan which helps you plan your dollars for each paycheck, as well as a worksheet to help you keep track of your financial position called a consumer equity worksheet.  I would even like to include an envelope tracking sheet to help you keep track of the envelopes you use monthly.  I was hoping to have it all ready for you now but because I ended up getting sick late last week, I fell behind schedule.  It was important to me, to get this posted as early as possible for you to use.  The sooner you get on a budget the better!! Stop wasting time!!

To download the budget click the NERD above and choose save, and then click the download button to save to your computer.  If you have any problems or questions regarding my budget please feel free to email me about them.  You can email me at brad.chaffee@enemyofdebt.com.

Happy Planning!!
