Three Ways to be Simply Healthy at Sam’s Club

I don’t have time to be sick. I don’t have the patience for it either. I’m used to running full tilt, doing several things in parallel at all times. So when my body fails me by falling victim to an illness during the flu season, I become frustrated at my lack of production, as well as my inability to keep my household running at maximum efficiency. When it comes to my family members, I hate seeing them not feeling well and not being able really do much to fix it for them. Which is why I find that the best […] Read more »

Sunday Afternoon #LaundryBliss With Purex Laundry Detergent

Laundry was on my mind as I was running errands last Sunday morning, because I knew I was out of laundry detergent. I stopped by Target just as they unlocked the doors, and surveyed the laundry detergent aisle for the best deal. I found a bottle of Purex laundry detergent boasting 10% more product than usual, advertising the potential of washing 90 loads for a cost of $7.99. That’s less than 9 cents per load! As I was standing in the checkout lane, anxious to get started with the day’s work, I thought about how I could have purchased my […] Read more »

Are You Taking Care Of Your Money?

Do you take good care of your money? Think about that question for a few minutes while I tell you a story. My daughter went to an outdoor swimming pool over the weekend with a friend’s family. The weather was hot making it a perfect day to go swimming. Even though the pool was crowded, my daughter had a fantastic time. Until she discovered that the $20 she brought with her was missing from her swim bag. She wasn’t the only one that had lost money, either. Her friend’s mother had $40 stolen from her purse as well. Apparently, the […] Read more »

Club Stores are NOT Always Cheaper

In an effort to take advantage of our 2% cash back perk of our executive membership, I’ve been trying to get in the habit of making bulk buying run to Costco once a month. By purchasing products that we always need and use in bulk once a month I figured I’d save time and money. One thing consumers have to be very careful about is whether what we’re buying is actually cheaper at a club store. The perception many consumers have is that if you buy gigantic packages at a club store, it MUST be a good deal. But I […] Read more »

Millennials should skip the 401(k) and go ROTH all the way

When I was a young adult there were only two options to prepare for retirement: Pensions and 401(k)s. Well, there was also Social Security – but we won’t go there! The investing landscape has changed dramatically. The government has created other venues for tax favored accounts – and all of them are better than doing nothing. Everyone’s situation is different. I’m not a Financial Advisor so you need to seek the advice of a trained professional but I do think Millennials have the best opportunities to become investors and get complete control over their financial destinies if they skip the […] Read more »

You Can’t Beat Kohls Return Policy

Coffee drinkers are passionate about their morning go-juice. Maybe you’re one of these people, my wife certainly is. Which is why she was very concerned when her Keurig single cup coffee brewing system started acting up. Her particular model has a choice of three difference size cups, and even though she always chooses the largest of the three, she noticed that it just wasn’t filling up the cup as far as it should. She had to resort to running the cycle twice or even three times to get her morning cup of brew. It obviously was not working right. Consulting […] Read more »

Would You Bust Your Budget to Boycott a Business?

We have a running joke at my house that I should never tell my brother-in-law where I purchased the food I cook for him when he visits. When I happen to accidentally say it out loud he plugs his ears with his fingers and loudly repeats, “LA LA LA LA LA LA LA,” as to try to tune out what I’m saying. The reason being that the vast majority of our grocery shopping is done at Walmart. He refuses to shop there because he disagrees with how Walmart generally pays and treats its employees. These kinds of boycotts are not […] Read more »

It Takes Money To Save Money

It takes money to make money. It’s a common phrase you may have heard before. My interpretation of the phrase boils down to investing, whether it be in stocks or a business. If you have money, it gives you more options to be able to generate more money.   Over the weekend I found a similar but less known assertion to be true. It takes money to save money. One of the things that I had let go of while we were paying off our debt was our lawn care. I love having a lush green lawn, but achieving the look […] Read more »

Preventing Impulse Buys With A Waiting Period: Does it Work?

Delayed gratification:  The art of making yourself wait to purchase something new.  Some people use a self-imposed waiting period to make sure that they really want to part with their hard earned cash.  The thought is, you reassess the want to make a purchase after a designated waiting period.  Many times you’ll decide against the purchase, thus saving yourself from wasting money on impulsive purchase. But does this practice really work?  I had the opportunity recently to find out. About a month ago, we decreased our cell phone bill by $150 a month by switching to a no contract plan […] Read more »

No Contract Cell Phone Plans Exposed! Are They Really Better?

No contract mobile phone plans have become all the rage as of late.  I even tried one through a blogging opportunity last year and was actually quite impressed.  Apparently, no contract providers have gotten the attention of the major carriers, as they have begun to offer no contract plans of their own.  I received an email from my carrier outlining their no contract plan last Friday. We’re currently under a two year contract with ATT&T, and for my family of four plus two extended family members to all have smart phones sharing a 10GB data plan we pay $309 a […] Read more »

Free Student Mobile Plan With With Sprint’s My Way Promotion

Cell phones have become an important and convenient channel of communication, especially between parents and their children as they become increasingly active away from home.  My son got his first mobile phone about a year ago, and both my wife and I are happy he has it. A very obvious example of why occurred to me recently. Organized chaos is the best way I can describe the scene at my son’s high school as I turned onto the road that approaches the main entrance. This was a new scene for me, as my son usually rides the bus home. Today […] Read more »

Performance Check, 30 Day Financial Challenge

It is time to check in on my 30 day financial challenges. If you have been following along, I decided to utilize the “30 day challenge” concept popular for fitness, for finance. I chose two challenges. The first challenge is something I am familiar with, the five dollar bill challenge. It is pretty simple, every time you find yourself with a five dollar bill; you put it away and do not spend it. Although November is not quite over, I have saved $25 bucks. I am a debit card kind of girl, so I don’t normally carry or transact in […] Read more »
