Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University Week 11

If you are just tuning in I’m taking the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University classes and reviewing them each week. If you missed any you can catch them here;

The Class

This week was about making money, and was my favorite class so far. I’m really hooked on the idea of making more money right now. Dave talked about how we always must be learning new skills and information. Gone are the days of getting a job and working at that one job for 20+ years. He says “Find something that blends your skills, abilities, personality traits, values, dreams, and passions.” Well that’s the hard part isn’t it?

He goes on to give tips on job hunting and some tips for getting your resume seen. He says to first research the heck out of the company you are trying to get to hire you. Then send an introduction letter, then your resume, and then follow up. Dave also reminds us that most people find a job through someone they know, not through the classifieds. He said classified ads only find you a job 15% of the time and sending out unsolicited resumes only work 10% of the time. Which seems high to me because that means that if you send out an unsolicited resume to 10 companies you will find a job. That doesn’t seem right! I’d think it was more like 2%. But either way, don’t forget to network, network, network, since that produces 75% of the jobs!

He made several references during the class for places to get more info. He suggested the short film series Trombone Player Wanted by Marcus Buckingham. This series is about putting your strengths to work for you. He also talked about Dan Miller of 48days.com who has a website dedicated to helping you find the work you love. Lastly, Dave recommended Good to Great by Jim Collins. Which is about how to turn a “just Ok” company into a great company.

The Sharing

We had a little success this class. One student now has a fully funded baby emergency fund. Yay! We all clapped for her. She also told a story about going to car dealership to test drive a car she likes. She said she didn’t have any intention of buying it because she is planning to save up and pay cash. She said the salesman was speechless. Which I don’t know why she is test driving the car when she has no intention of buying it, but whatever. It’s a nice change of conversation about buying cars than I usually hear.

Mrs. Pink (our typical Dave Ramsey couple) talked about her concerns about getting a second job to help pay down their debt. She said that she is worried about not having enough family time. Which is a big concern, of course. But I also feel that maybe she doesn’t see the long term picture of why she may need to get a job. I feel like maybe reality hasn’t hit her yet.

She did go on to suggest the book Quitter by Jon Acuff. It’s about closing the gap between your day job and your dream job.

We talked about how we all found out last jobs, which I don’t even remember how I found my last job. I think it was from an online ad. How did you find your last job?

Next week: Real Estate and Mortgages

    This is definitely one of my favorite classes and one that changed the way I see myself in the working world. Dan Miller’s book 48 Days to the Work You Love is one of my favorite books of it’s kind. Dan Miller also wrote a book called No More Mondays which takes the “Thank God it’s Friday, Oh No It’s Monday” mindset and turns it on its head. I was lucky enough to be mentioned by Dan Miller on his popular podcast some time back. He’s an awesome guy.

    There’s also a book for people who feel they’re too old to change career paths called Half Time by Bob Buford.

    I still know people who are stuck in the one job mentality but for the most part I think the idea of doing what you love is catching on. Technology has given us the ability to do things we weren’t able to do even a decade ago.

    I feel this class had a major impact on where I am right now. Now I know why you’re so excited about my January Challenge! 😀

    Great post Ashley!
