Decluttering Is An Opportunity To Make Money

EOD_SalePicIt hasn’t happened for awhile, but walking through my home I could tell it was time. It was time for a good stuff purging, which also happens to be a great opportunity to put a little extra cash in my pocket. I grabbed a notebook and pen and started writing down things I believed I could sell in our latest round of decluttering.

I went through my home making a list of things I could sell.

Lawn Mower

The handle is held on by a makeshift bolt, it leaks oil, and earlier this spring the cable that controlled the self propulsion mechanism broke. After ten years of use, I decided it was time for a new lawn mower. But someone might have the skills to fix the cable and the oil leak, finding a use for my old lawn mower,  I’m going to put it on Craig’s list for $25.

Computers

When my son upgraded his computer, I bought his old computer and did a few of my own upgrades. The result is a computer much better than the desktop my wife and I use. I could swap out the desktop with the computer I bought from my son, and then sell the desktop. I think I could probably get about $50 for it.

Additionally, my son helped a friend upgrade his computer. His friend then left behind his old parts stating my son could keep it. I could combine those parts with some other components I have laying around and have another computer I could sell for an additional $50.

Furniture

We recently bought some new furniture for our living room. The furniture that was in that room was moved to our basement where our kids hang out with their friends. This leaves us with the furniture that had been in the basement with nowhere to go. The couch, love seat, coffee table and end table will have a starting asking price of $75.

Remote Control Cars

My son’s closet is a complete disaster area. It should probably be condemned and is at the top of my list of things that we need to clean out this summer. One thing I know is in there (somewhere) are two electric remote control cars. He received his as a Christmas present one year, and I bought mine so we could go to the hobby track together. They haven’t seen the light of day in a few years. If they still work, they could be sold for $100 a piece. Of course, I might end up wanting to just play with them instead.

Just walking through my home, I identified several things that I could sell, as well as a whole pile of things that could be thrown away. You may not have all, or even any of the things I have marked for sale. The point is to get your creative juices flowing. Make it a game! Go through your own home and look for things that you could get rid of that will not only make your home easier to move around in or clear off some storage shelves, but also put some money in your pocket!

When was the last time you purged extra stuff from your home? Did you sell anything? How much money did you make?

I am just starting to look for things around the house to sell. I think some of it I am going to start with ebay (the stuff I think will go for more) and then hold a yard sale later in the summer. It’s definitely time to start making some room in my house and why not try to make a few bucks at the same time!
