Switching Financial Roles

There’s an old saying about walking a mile in the shoes of someone else to gain wisdom and understanding. That’s true in many aspects of life, including your finances. I’m not talking about living a day in the life of someone significantly more or less off financially, I’m talking about your significant other. Let’s be real, as much as we might talk about doing finances together, there’s usually one person that drives the family’s finances more than the other. There may be financial meetings and discussions to keep everyone on the same page, but in most cases one person carries […] Read more »

Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 2/9

As I was using my snowblower, I noticed that one of the three gears ceased to work.  I got the snowblower for free from my parents, so any money I have to put into it is really not that big of a deal.  However, with spring seemingly nearby I’d like to hold off on spending money on this season.  I have a feeling that other gears may stop working as I continue to use it, but if I could wait and deal with it when utility bills drop of during the warmer, but not hot springtime months, it would certainly […] Read more »

Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 2/2

Who’s watching the Super Bowl this weekend?  I’m bummed my Vikings won’t be in it, but I’ll be watching.  I was thinking of firing up the smoker and making something, but last week I spent 6 hours in front of it and what I made didn’t turn out.  In my defense, it was something I never made before.  But, putting in that amount of effort, and sinking about $50 into it between the meat, charcoal and wood, has left a bad taste in my mouth (get it?).  I just don’t feel like lighting it up again this weekend.  I guess […] Read more »

What You Need To Know About Filling Out The FAFSA

A college education is an expensive adventure, and paying for it requires all the help you can get. Grants or low interest loans from the federal government can help, but in order to get them you first have to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Filling out a government form can be a time consuming and painful ordeal. Fortunately, the FAFSA isn’t that bad especially if you’ve done some prep work ahead of time. The FAFSA can be completed online, but before you begin, here’s what you need to know about filling out the FAFSA. FSA […] Read more »

Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 1/26

With one door closing, another opens.  The bad news is that my Vikings lost in the NFC championship game last weekend.  The good news is that football season is coming to a conclusion which means my Sundays are now free to get some indoor projects done before Spring arrives.  On the list is repainting two bathrooms, and installing a closet organizer in our master bedroom closet.   None of these will be that expensive, because I’ll be doing them myself. Looking forward to being productive! Fist pump for DIY projects, and my favorite  posts of the week! Posts That Make Me […] Read more »

6 College Apartment Expenses Other Than Rent

Teaching your child about finances doesn’t stop once they go to college. In fact, the stakes get higher and the lessons much more similar to real life. My son and his friends are moving into an apartment for his second year of college in the fall after living in the dorms his first year. His main focus is how to pay his monthly rent, but there are many other expenses he needs to be thinking about and planning for. Security Deposit Moving into an apartment requires a security deposit up front. This amount will be split among the roommates, but […] Read more »

This weekend the NFL’s AFC and NFC championship games are on.  I was planning to make some ribs on the smoker using a new rub I found.  Imagine my surprise when a knock at my door the other night was my neighbors bringing me…….ribs!  Over the last few months I had shared some of my BBQ with them, the latest being some pulled pork just last weekend.  To show their appreciation they gave me a package of St. Louis cut pork ribs.    Now I have a new rub, AND the ribs to put it on.  This is going to be […] Read more »

What NFL Wide Receiver Adam Thielen Can Teach Us About Finances

I’m a huge Minnesota Vikings fan. This year’s team is doing really well for a lot of reasons, but one player that has a special place in my heart is that of Adam Thielen. Thielen actually played Division 2 college football at little known Minnesota State University, Mankato. That just happens to be my alma mater. He wasn’t recruited out of high school, went undrafted at the NFL draft, and had to pay to display his skills at a regional combine. He was invited to Vikings training camp, and was added as a practice squad member that year. From there […] Read more »

The last two weeks have been brutally cold in Minnesota.  Look, I know I live in Minnesota and this shouldn’t be unexpected, but an extended period of time where daily high temperatures struggle to break zero wears on a person.  Not to mention, I’m not looking forward to seeing my utility bill next month.  It might just put the deep freeze on my budget.  See what I did there? My Favorite Inexpensive Relaxation Technique

One of my personal guilty pleasures is finding ways to relax. I go all out, 100%, a million miles an hour most of the time, so when I need some downtime I need it bad. Many of my favorite ways to indulge in some relaxation can be fairly expensive. A weekend away and massages are two activities that really help recharge my batteries, but also come with a fairly hefty price tag. However just recently my daughter introduced me to a relaxation activity that I absolutely love, and it costs just a few dollars. Stressed out ladies and gentlemen, I […] Read more »
