Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 7/8

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July!  My family’s big plans consisted of……well…..not much.  We picked up a friend of my son’s at the airport and went to the Mall Of America indoor theme park (using all day wristbands that I got for over half off through my employer…SCORE!).  Then we came home, grilled, and watched our city’s fireworks from a hill in a park behind our house.  They were kind of far away, but there were also plenty of people around us that were shooting off fireworks, and we enjoyed them all.  Cheap theme park wristbands, and […] Read more »

Three Reasons To Decline a Credit Limit Increase

The email was from a credit card provider and the subject line said “Congratulations!” I opened the email to find out that I was being offered a $3000 credit line increase. The line of credit in question was one we used for our hotel bill on our trip to Austin, Texas as the card gave a significant percentage cash back for travel expenses. We hadn’t used the card literally in years, and I’m guessing that the use of the card prompted the issuer to sweeten the pot for us to continue to use it. I was about to click on […] Read more »

Happy 4th of July weekend, EOD Nation!  We don’t have any big plans for the weekend, although I definitely plan on firing up my grill to make some delicious food, and because……’Murica.   My son also has a friend coming to visit, so we’ll have a house guest for the week.  My wife and I instantly feel the need to start planning activities, but the look in our son’s eyes as we started discussing was priceless.  He wanted to hang out with his friend….not his friend and his parents  Time for us to take a step back.  LOL. Get your fists […] Read more »

Save Money By Cooking At Home: Mexican Night Edition

“I want a Margarita,” said my wife. We both had had a busy day doing separate activities and we were making plans for the evening together. My wife was in the mood for an adult beverage, and we began discussing where we could get a good margarita and dinner. We both made a few suggestions, but nothing really sounded good. Neither of us really wanted to be around other people. What she said next was music to my ears. “We could just get stuff and make drinks and dinner at home.” Not being a fan of dining out, I was […] Read more »

Last weekend my wife and I were in Duluth, MN for me to run a 5K and a half marathon as part of Grandma’s Marathon weekend.  With that now behind us, it’s time to focus on summer projects.  First up is a leftover from last year:  re-staining the deck.  I stripped it of the old stain last year, but didn’t get to finishing the project.  So, we’ll be doing some light sanding and then putting a fresh coat of oil based stain on it.  If we paid someone to do it, it would cost over $700.   No Thanks.  I know […] Read more »

6 Ways To Save Money When Traveling to Run A Marathon

Last weekend my wife and I traveled about 4 hours north to Duluth, Minnesota so I could run a half marathon as part of the Grandma’s Marathon weekend. If you’ve ever traveled to another city to participate in a large running event, you know that the prices of many necessities are jacked sky high because they have a captive audience. For example, hotel room prices double during marathon weekend in Duluth, and guests are required to stay (or at least pay for) two nights. Also, event parking prices go into effect for lots near marathon activities. The good news is […] Read more »

Race weekend is finally here! After months of training and hard work, I’ll be running a 5k this evening, and a half marathon tomorrow as part of Grandma’s Marathon weekend in Duluth, MN.  Vonnie and I traveled to Duluth yesterday and one thing is clear; captive audience prices apply.  Hotel room prices double for this weekend, and you have to stay two nights.  Souvenirs, food, you name it and the price has gone up, bute’re doing our best to stay on budget and have fun! Get your fists up to wish me luck….and for my favorite posts of the week! […] Read more »

Don’t Be Fooled By The End Result

I’ve been called crazy, nuts, stupid, inspirational, amazing and countless other terms. I’m a long distance runner. I’ve run 5 marathons, several 10 mile races, a handful of 10Ks and even a few 5Ks. This weekend I’ll be running my second half marathon. Many people cannot comprehend how I can run such long distances. The trap these observers have fallen into is they only see the end result. I don’t just wake up and decide to run 26.2 miles. What isn’t seen is my alarm clock going off at 4:15am to go for my training runs 5 days a week. […] Read more »

Yesterday we said goodbye to another school year.   My wife and I are now the proud parents of a Senior and a Freshman.  Scary.  My wife, who works as a paraprofessional at an elementary school, is also now off for the summer.  The good news is, because the school district prorates her pay for 9 months of work over the full 12 month calendar year we still get her normal paycheck but she doesn’t have to go to the job.  You can imagine she’s just a little excited about that. On another personal note, today is my 20 year service […] Read more »

Decluttering Is An Opportunity To Make Money

It hasn’t happened for awhile, but walking through my home I could tell it was time. It was time for a good stuff purging, which also happens to be a great opportunity to put a little extra cash in my pocket. I grabbed a notebook and pen and started writing down things I believed I could sell in our latest round of decluttering. I went through my home making a list of things I could sell. Lawn Mower The handle is held on by a makeshift bolt, it leaks oil, and earlier this spring the cable that controlled the self […] Read more »

The Pizel Family has had a number of adventures over the last few months.  Trips to Florida and Texas, my daughter was confirmed, our annual Memorial Weekend party as well as other smaller events.  With all of that behind us, there’s just one thing out in front of us yet which is a trip to Duluth, MN in two weeks where I’ll be running a half-marathon.  But this weekend…..absolutely nothing.  I feel like hibernating in my home, and putting my very well used wallet into a locked safe.  Sound good to anyone else? Now, get those fists up for my […] Read more »

What Body Piercing Can Teach a Teenager About Finances, Value, and Life

When I got home at 6:00am from my usual morning workout, I found my daughter not only already awake, but showered, dressed and ready to go for the day. All of this before she normally rolls out of bed. She seemed excited and anxious. I quickly found out why. “I get my piercing today,” she said to me with a glimmer in her eye. I then remembered she had an appointment later that day to get the cartilage of her upper ear pierced. She had been asking for awhile to have it done, and needed our permission and assistance since […] Read more »

Memorial Day weekend is here!  It’s the unofficial start to summer……although the kids have 2 weeks of school left.  The holiday weekend is a good reminder that we need to adjust our grocery shopping list, and our budget, to account for the kids being home during the day.  For me personally it means I can sleep a little later as I don’t have to make sure kids are up, fed, and off to school.  Yup, that’s right….in a few weeks I’ll get to sleep in to 5:30am!!! Fist pump for sleeping in! Posts That Make Me Fist Pump 2/3rds of […] Read more »
