My Financial Goals for 2020

Another year is coming to an end, and as many people do I’m setting some goals for the new year. This list of goals is purely financial, aimed at my financial position being better at the end of 2020 than it is now. I’ll review the progress of my goals every three months so you can help hold me accountable. Here’s my list of financial goals for 2020: Increase Emergency Fund In addition to the standard reasons for having an emergency fund, our appliances and vehicles are aging. I won’t replace them if I don’t have to, but if I’m […] Read more »

What Are The Costs Of Euthanizing A Family Pet

We unexpectedly had to put one of our cats to sleep last week. She was over 16 years old and had lived a good life, but due to some health issues it was time to say goodbye. Even in times of grief, there are financial decisions to keep in mind. There are several costs associated with euthanizing a cat, and the total cost of doing so depends on how you want to deal with the remains of your furry family member. Below are the costs associated with euthanizing our cat and are meant only as an example as costs will […] Read more »

Fist Pump Friday: I Love You Like A Blogger Roundup – 12/13/19

It’s been a hard week in my home, as we had to say goodbye to one of our cats. We were blessed with her for over 16 years, our kids literally don’t remember life with out her. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few months ago, and while we had that under control with medication the vet thinks she threw a clot mid-week that went to her back end rendering her back legs only partially operative.  My wife, I and our daughter surrounded her with love as the vet sent her across the rainbow bridge. We have so many great […] Read more »

Jackbox Party Packs: Hours of Inexpensive Entertainment For Your Next Party

Author’s Note: It’s worth it to me to make sure readers understand this is not a sponsored post. This is my own true experience, and I’m sharing this product purely because the games are truly a ton of fun and provide hours of quality, inexpensive party entertainment. “Do you really want to play this game?” I asked my wife, knowing that I was about to give her one of her Christmas gifts a full month early. We had a house full of guests for Thanksgiving, and my wife wanted to play a game called Fibbage which is included in a […] Read more »

I’m going to have an incredible steak and king crab leg dinner this weekend at a fantastic restaurant.  Just kidding.  Well, I am going to have that meal, but I’m making it at home. My wife and I are getting together with some friends for a great meal at home, and then a comedy show at a club. I offered to try to save more money by doing a comedy act too, but we’re going to leave that to the professionals. Fist pump for saving money by making great meals at home, AND for my favorite posts of the week! […] Read more »

5 Ways To Spot A Scam Email

I opened my inbox to find an email receipt from PayPal for tickets from a travel website totaling $220. I made no such purchase. It looked very much like an official email from the online payment service provider. With a sick feeling in my stomach, I wondered if I had been hacked. But looking closer at the email, I knew it was simply a scam. Several things about the email convinced me it was not authentic: Suspicious Sender Address While the name of the sender was recognizable, the actual email address didn’t even contain the name of the supposed […] Read more »

Today is that shopping phenomenon known as Black Friday.  Crowds of people will flood stores looking for the best deal.  Once again, I found the best possible deal – I saved 100% by staying home and sleeping in. I prefer to take my time, shop around, and find exactly the product I’m looking for, preferably online.  Then I just wait for it to show up on my doorstep. You’re Not Stuck With That Late Fee

Lenders and credit card companies assess a late fee the second your payment is late. Late fee amounts vary by lender, but can be a significant amount of cash. However, if you are late, a quick phone call and the right tone of voice can have that late fee rescinded. My automobile loan lender for whatever reason does not allow online payments, so each month I mail a check. I normally send it well in advance of the due date. However last month with the way the weekend landed as well as there not being mail on Veteran’s day my […] Read more »

Happy Friday, EOD Nation! I’m now 10 weeks post Achilles tendon repair surgery, out of the boot and walking in shoes for 3.5 weeks. Literally 10 minutes ago I figured out why I was still limping, and why my groin and hip was hurting. I wasn’t trusting my tendon, cutting my stride with my right foot short.  The pulling up of my leg prematurely was aggravating my groin and hip.  Once I let my stride fully complete, allowing my foot to roll and my tendon bend the way it’s supposed to, my limp is gone and I no longer get […] Read more »

DIY Repair: 4 Things To Check Before Replacing Your Garbage Disposal

I thought my Sunday afternoon would be spent replacing my garbage disposal. It had stopped working the day before after washing some food scraps down the drain and turning it on. It made a funny noise, and after turning it off and back on, it ceased to make any noise at all. I figured the motor had burnt out, and that my wallet was about to be burnt to the tune of $80. Garbage Disposal Troubleshooting I mentioned my situation to my neighbor, who gave me a few suggestions to try before heading to the hardware store to buy a […] Read more »

This weekend’s project is to put up additional shelving in our mechanical room. I have two rebate certificates from Menards totaling about $100 I earned from purchases made during the summer.  Menards commonly has 11% rebate promotions, and one just happened to coincide with some larger purchases I was making anyway.  I’ll get something knocked off the “honey-do” list, and it won’t cost me a single dollar.  Can’t beat that! Teens And Money: Bills My High School Daughter Pays

Teaching children financial skills is crucial to their success with money as an adult. However, it’s also a parent’s responsibility to provide necessities of life and opportunities to participate in activities that will create well rounded individuals ready to take on the real world. Parents have to find a balance between providing their children with a comfortable life and teaching financial responsibility. Below I share the major categories of what my wife and I expect our daughter, who is a high school senior, to pay for using income from her of her part-time job, and what we supply for […] Read more »
