Know What You’re Going To Spend, Before You Spend It

Know what you’re going to spend before you spend it. It’s more than good advice, it’s a requirement for financial success. Unless you have infinite monetary resources, you can’t just make purchases without having some idea of how much you’re about to spend. Without doing so, you’re just a purchase or two away from blowing your budget. My wife and I went through an experience in the past week that reminded us just how important this advice can be. Super Sized Skin Care Bill Over breakfast, my wife mentioned she needed some skin care products. This would be our […] Read more »

Life Changes Cause Budget Changes

Major life changes requires changes to your budget. My wife and I are getting used to being empty nesters as both our kids are now away at college. Since it’s just the two of us, our needs have changed so we’re reevaluating all our spending and adjusting our budget accordingly. Below are four expenditures in our budget that I believe are going to change now that neither of our kids are living at home. Groceries Food is the obvious one. The grocery cart differs not only in how much but also what food I purchase during a typical shopping […] Read more »

How To Bow Out Of Group Activities You Cannot Afford

Every budget has limits. Whether you’re rich and famous or middle class, there are limits on how much you can spend. Some just run into their limit faster. In a society where success is equated with how much money you have, it’s hard to tell people you don’t have the funds to buy or do something. Especially when you’re being asked to be included in something that sounds really fun like a night out, a weekend away, or a group vacation. With that in mind, here is a list of polite ways to gracefully decline an invitation without making it […] Read more »

You’re Not Stuck With That Late Fee

Lenders and credit card companies assess a late fee the second your payment is late. Late fee amounts vary by lender, but can be a significant amount of cash. However, if you are late, a quick phone call and the right tone of voice can have that late fee rescinded. My automobile loan lender for whatever reason does not allow online payments, so each month I mail a check. I normally send it well in advance of the due date. However last month with the way the weekend landed as well as there not being mail on Veteran’s day my […] Read more »

How To Use Every Penny On A Prepaid Credit Card

I bought new tires during a Black Friday sale. I got a great price on the tires, plus a rebate in the form of two $61 prepaid visa credit cards. They’ve been sitting on my desk for months unused, waiting for just the right opportunity. It’s hard to spend an exact amount. I’ve had prepaid credit cards before, and typically I get it down to a few dollars, buy some gum I really don’t need and then throw it away when I get the balance as close to zero and then throw it away. Three Ways To Use All Of […] Read more »

You DESERVE To Be A Satisfied Customer

Businesses are run by people, which means occasionally mistakes will be made. That being said, customers have basic expectations when spending their hard earned money. When those expectations are not met, businesses have an obligation to do something to make it up to their customers. I recently had two such experiences, which the businesses handled perfectly. Olive Garden Put Me On Hold, Forever I dialed Olive Garden’s number to place my to go order as I pulled out of the driveway. I expected to be told it would be ready in 15 minutes, which coincidentally the amount of time it […] Read more »

Did Hilton Honors Rewards Give Me A Two Room Suite Upgrade?

I had an interesting hotel experience over the weekend that made no sense to me. I wanted to share it with you and see if you could possibly explain what happened while I attempt to get an explanation from the hotel itself. On a weekend where prices were jacked up to at least double the normal rate, I stayed in a suite with a living room, separate bedroom with a King bed and two bathrooms for $189.  More like a timeshare/condo than a typical hotel room. Did my Hilton Honors Rewards membership have anything to do with it? My wife […] Read more »

What Is The Most Inexpensive Way To Break Into Your House?

We came home from an afternoon out with friends to realize we were locked out of our home. I hadn’t taken my keys with me since our neighbors were driving, and our daughter locked the door on her way out. Normally none of this would be a problem as we’d just open the garage door with the keyless entry pad, but we had unplugged the opener for a party in the garage the night before. We stared at the door for a few moments and wondered, “What is the most inexpensive way to break into your house?” Call A Locksmith […] Read more »

Hindsight is 20 dollars: An Andrew Jackson can save you 2 hours or more on home improvement

A termite infestation was discovered during our last insect treatment. Our “guy”, Bugs by Brian, sprays on a quarterly basis and always does a great job keeping spiders and other bugs from getting into our home. What we didn’t know was that large pieces of wood separating the sloped yard from our flowerbed and patio was home to some wood-eating critters. Not wanting to spend any money on the project, I decided to take care of them myself. This was a big project but I already knew what had to be done – I had replaced some of the 6’ […] Read more »
